Research on the 1871 Census shows two Meadows families living only a few doors apart in Wales
Street, Kings Sutton. Elizabeth Meadows father was William 55 years old, and Mary Ann his wife. The other family also had a William Meadows 43 years old as the Head, and the wife was Sarah nee Reeves. She also had a son John, born in Jul 1872 but he died just three weeks/months old. The only Elizabeth recorded in the 1881 Census as being born in Kings Sutton in the right year was married to a Joseph Gorr. They lived at 2 Battures Rd. Eltham, Kent. I assumed originally that he must have died and Elizabeth then married Edward Mills. Latest research June 2005 - Gorr was a transcription error. Cross is the real surname and they were married in 1874 (2 years after the birth of John Edward Meadows.) I think that Joseph Cross may have been the true father of John Meadows. 1891 Census, a John Meadows (Step Son) is recorded as living with Edward and Elizabeth Mills. Joseph is missing from the 1891 Census. By the time of the 1901 Census, Joseph Cross was living with a nephew, James Cross in Kings Norton, Birmingham, but still recorded as married. This may be the reason that Edward Mills never married Elizabeth. |
